Find Your Passions
“They’ll become the your backbone, and will lead to stronger decision-making and a happier future.”
We all have things that make us go. While they may be difficult to discover, understanding them is the backbone of leading a successful life.
We all must understand what drives us in order to define and attain our own version of success. Once discovered, you’ll use these drivers to support the goals that you set for yourself. You’ll construct your life around these points and circle back to them when you hit obstacles.
To discover your true core passions, we recommend some version of free writing. Grab your tablet, computer or a paper and pen (whichever will drive the creative part of your brain) and begin writing what comes to mind. Start with prompts like “I’m happiest when…” or “My ideal day would involve….” Since you’re the only one reading this, be completely open and honest. If you hold back, you risk fully understanding yourself.
Dig deep into the topics you list. For instance, don’t just say that you like math. What about math do you like (i.e. problem solving, its objective nature, etc). As another example, if you like cars, do you like the mechanics, driving, history, beauty, etc? There’s a lot of aspects to every activity. Honing in on the specific points that interest you will allow you to duplicate that interest in other things. Though you might find this really difficult, keep going. The harder you try, the more clarity you’ll find.
Once you have written a page or so, stop and review what you wrote. Look for common threads or recurring ideas. These common threads should serve as your framework for a satisfying life. They’ll become the your backbone, and will lead to stronger decision-making and a happier future.
*If you believe your core passions involve destructive or negative activity, or the harming of another person, we encourage you to not act upon it Instead, please talk through those thoughts with a trusted adviser.
