On Giving Feedback

On Giving Feedback

Dec 29, 2017 | Posted by Design Services Admin | Others' Experiences |

Along the way, and after several critical miss-steps, I learned the long lasting power of a compliment.  The counter to that is the particular sting of a public critique, also long lasting.  Projects are often difficult, heroes surface by working hard outside of view, and yes errors are made.

It’s my firm belief that the typical person wants to do what’s right, cause success, and be acknowledged for that even if they don’t want the spotlight.  I also don’t think public critique is ever appreciated.  In fact, the true intent of a critique can often be lost in the noise and offense taken from a public sharing.

When I see legitimate outstanding performance, I never hesitate to compliment to the person, and especially their immediate superior.  Be warned that the word “legitimate” is very important.  Over doing this action actually can diminish its effectiveness.   And a very private critique is always preferred by all.  Master this practice, and productive teamwork is nearly insured.
